Happy Monday!
Due to the snow days last week, our week ahead is some the same as last week.
In Math, we will work on 2-Dimensional figures, lines, segments, and rays, angles, and triangles and quadrilaterals. Again, this is our Geometry unit. We will also complete some foldables to help the students in remembering some of the terms.
In Science this week, we will continue our work on the food chain with some activities. If our week goes as planned (meaning no more snow days, which Tuesday seems to be a likely chance), we will have a quiz on Thursday over food chains. By Friday, we will move on to chapter 5, again discussing animals eating habits.
In Reading this week, we will focus on Main Idea. To do this, we will make a flipbook on Monday, reminding students how to look for Main Idea. We will then read an informational text and discuss the Main Idea, and review of Author's Purpose. Students will have another activity to enhance their knowledge in looking for Main Idea called "Main Idea Pockets". (All of these activities will be glued into their Reader's Notebooks.) Students will have several small books and articles to review and practice finding the Main Idea. On Friday, we will take the opportunity to participate in "Read Across the Country" day. This activity is part of our AR program. The goal of this day is to read, and take and pass as many quizzes as the students can. We will be spending all afternoon working towards this goal. The students are working towards surpassing last year's total number of quizzes taken across America. We will try to hold off on quizzes until Friday to help with this goal.
In English language Arts, students will continue work on their Presidential Presentations. We are using the researched information to put together a collaborative slide show on Google Presentations. Each student should have a task that they are responsible for completing. All students can access Google Presentation and work on the presentation simultaneously. Students can log in from anywhere! Just go to Google, and the students can log in using the information that was given to them. But as a reminder, their log in is their first initial, last name, and the number 21, all with no spaces. For example, mine would be "akountz21". All of their passwords are the same. They are all "akountz4". That remains the same and the students do NOT use their names in the password. Let me know if you have any questions about this presentation.

February 19-22
I hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend! I did!
This is what our week ahead looks like...(if a snow storm doesn't throw us off!)
In Math on Tuesday, we will have a test over measurement. On Wednesday, we will begin looking at 3 D figures, then moving on to 2 D figures, and then to lines, segments, and rays. That is right! We are moving into Geometry. This can be a trying time for some students, but others may catch on very quickly depending on how their minds work. Some students are more geared towards numbers, others are more geared towards shapes and patterns.
This week we will finish our Social Studies unit with a test on Tuesday. The rest of the week, we will begin looking at Science again. Wednesday through Friday we will study and have several activities involving the food chain.
In Reading, students will look at drawing conclusions. On Tuesday, we review the concept of drawing conclusions, and showing students how to draw conclusions. We will use several different small books to work on the concept of drawing conclusions.
In English Language Arts, students will use this week to complete a short research project on one of four chosen presidents. Students will research on the first day, then will go into teams and collaborate their ideas to complete a Google Presentation on the groups given president. Students will use paragraph writing techniques from last week to develop a collaborative paper about the team's president.

February 11-15
This year is flying by....
Here is a look at our week ahead.
In Math, we will continue our work with metric units in learning how to convert them. We will work on the problem solving strategy of logical reasoning, and begin looking at measuring temperature. By Friday, we will be preparing for a test that we will take after our three-day weekend, on Tuesday.
In Social Studies we have our Chapter 3 test today. We will then begin our Chapter 4 unit on the arrival of Europeans in Missouri. We will complete all lessons and notes in a packet form. This packet is what we base the test off of, so we will encourage the students to use it to study for the test. The test for this chapter will also be on the following Tuesday, February 19.
Reading this week takes a closer look at First and Second-Hand accounts. This involves understanding if the author was present during the event they are writing about (First-Hand), of if their writing takes place much later, or as an outsider (Second-Hand). We will be using several stories to help us with this concept. We will also use this week to take a second look a Cause and Effect. On Wednesday, we have a HALF DAY. We are using the majority of this day as a "Reading Marathon". The students will spend 110 minutes alternating reading and writing from their own book. We have several really fun activities to bring their reading to life through writing.
In Writing this week, we will work on proper paragraphing. Our goal is for students to first recognize the three aspects of a paragraph, and then to apply the skills. By the end of the week, students will compose a paragraph about their opinion on school lunches, prompted by a non-fiction article that we will use to identify the proper parts of a paragraph.

February 4-8
Happy Monday! Due to the Snow Day last week, we rearranged some lessons, took out a few things, and pushed some things back- in case you see something that we did last week on this week's agenda...
Here is a look at our week ahead:
In Math, we will work on converting customary units, complete the chapter review, and the chapter test on Wednesday. On Thursday, we will begin looking at metric length, and Friday will be metric capacity and mass.
In Social Studies, we will look at the first people of Missouri, which would include Native American tribes. We will also look deeper into this in Library. This is a short unit again, so we will review at the end of the week, and test on Monday of next week, just as a head's up.
This week in Reading, we will look at sequencing events and looking deeper into characters. We will use several stories, as well as our Reader's Notebook to look deeper into these.
In English Language Arts, we have a busy week of presentations! On Monday, we will finish drafting our final drafts. Tuesday through Friday will be presentations. Please note the reminders sent home with your child last week and ensure that they have their materials on their respective day. Thank you all so much for your support and help with this project. It is greatly appreciated.
