March 25-28

Our short week just became shorter!  We still have a lot to cover this week, and we are going to make it work!

Here we go...

In Math, we will continue work with fractions by comparing and ordering them on Tuesday.  On Wednesday, we will look at checking for reasonableness, as well as finding parts of a group.

Social Studies will drop a day this week.  We will review on Tuesday, and test on Wednesday.

In English Language Arts, students will work on editing using their own writing pieces, and some new strategies. For instance, on Tuesday, we will look at finding passive verbs (verbs meaning to be) and replace them with more active verbs to spice up their word choice.  On Wednesday, we will read backwards to try to find spelling mistakes.  We will then take the opportunity to review punctuation and capitalization.

In Reading, students will finish reading the Sisters Grimm book and work on any reading strategy to compliment what we have read.

On Thursday, we are here for a half day.  On this day, we will apply our MAP testing strategies to a movie, "Megamind".  This is to show students that all of the skills we learn can be applied other places in life.

As a reminder, we have a half day on Thursday (make-up day), and no school on Friday or Monday for our Spring Break.  Enjoy the long weekend, and have a Blessed Easter!

March 18- 22

Here is a look at our week ahead.

In Math, students will be looking at area and volume.  By Wednesday, we will begin studying fractions.  This is another concept that could be difficult for some students.  It is important that students, parents, and teacher   work together to make sure that  there is a strong understanding of the concept.  Please feel free to contact me if you feel there is any confusion.

This week, we will get back to Social Studies.  We will begin the unit by discussing Missouri becoming the 24th state, and all of the history that comes with that.  We will also read and learn about Missouri and the part it played in westward expansion.  We will be ready for a test by next Tuesday.

In Reading, we will be looking at a couple of different types of informational texts.  We will start our week by discussing technical texts using the story, "Talking Under Water".  We will then move onto another technical text, "Tools of the Fossil Hunter".  With each of these, we will discuss what a technical text is, and tips for reading it.  We will then read a scientific text, "Nature's Worst Storm", as well as "Adapting to Survive".  Both are texts that discuss Science in a reading structure.  For all of these informational texts, students will complete a comprehension check using the tips for reading that we have discussed.

In English Language Arts, we will focus on conventions in writing.  In this, students will take time to notice the difference between revising and editing, and well as practice both.  Students will use their own writing by the end of the week to practice skills in revising and editing.

If this looks like a short week, it is!  We have our Squaw Creek Field trip in Friday, March 22.  We will leave at 8:30 and return at 2:30.

Look for report cards on Tuesday.  Please sign and return as soon as possible.

March 11- 15

Happy Monday!  Here is a look at our week ahead.

In Math we will continue with geometry.  On Monday, we will study congruent and similar figures.  Students will then move onto transformations and symmetry in geometric shapes.  On Wednesday, we will look to a  problem solving strategy involving finding a pattern.  Thursday and Friday we will study perimeter and circumference.

In Science, we are preparing for a field trip that will take place on March 22.  For this reason, we are quickly finishing up our conservation unit so the students are well prepared for the trip to Squaw Creek.  On Monday, we will read lesson 6 and Tuesday, we will take an open book quiz over it.  (As students have probably noted, the open book quizzes are not as easy as the may sound.  Students must use a lot of prior knowledge and information from the previous lessons to master these quizzes.)  On Wednesday, we will read lesson 7 and take the quiz on Thursday.  On Friday, we will read and quiz over lesson 8.  This will finish  up our conservation unit.

In Reading, students will look at plot.  We will use several stories to study this.  We will first use a story and SMART Board lesson for Gertrude Grew Great.  On Tuesday, we will read the story, Plot Chickens and create a poster to follow the plot of the story.  On Wednesday, we will reread a story from earlier in the year, and create another plot poster.  On Thursday and Friday, students will be in small groups reading their own stories search for plot.  They will then create a "plot sandwich" to present on Friday.

In English Language Arts, students will take practice using proper letter format through Thursday.  This should be a review, but this is a concept that is expected on the MAP test, so we are using this time to revisit the proper formatting.  On Friday, we will use an informational text to practice a new strategy that has us looking closer at the text provided, and answering deeper thinking questions.

Our quarter has been extended to March 15, so expect grade cards early next week.

March 4-8

Hopefully we will finally have a full week of school!  Maybe we can get our lessons back on track.  Here is our week ahead.

In Science, we will start Monday with an open-book quiz on lesson 4 and the food chain.  I hope you all enjoyed the fun stories from our Owl Pellet lesson...  We we start lesson 5 by reading Tuesday, still discussing feeding patterns in the different ecosystems.  On Wednesday, we will complete an activity on forest foods.  On Thursday, we will look at taking the lesson 5 quiz.  (We have a field trip approaching in late March and we are trying to cover as much of the conservation unit as we can before then.  With all of our missing days, we are really trying to squeeze at this point!)

In Math, we will continue and finish our geometry unit this week.  On Monday, we will study triangles and quadrilaterals.  On Tuesday, we will look at a problem solving strategy.  (These assignments tend to make students think outside the box, and how to solve the problem is always noticed straight away.  Hopefully, we can encourage the students to take their time and think the problem through.)  On Wednesday, students will study parts of a circle.  We will complete the lesson practice on Thursday, and test over chapter 19 on Friday.

In Reading, we are finally getting to take a look at Main Idea.  We will use several informational texts to do this, as well as many foldable activities.  (All of these were posted on last week's Blog entry but we decided to finish what we had missed on drawing conclusions before moving on to Main Idea.  Sorry for the redundancies.)

In English Language Arts, students will continue to work on their Presidential Research presentations, and be ready to present by Thursday or Friday, depending on how well technology cooperates with us!  I am really impressed with the student's abilities on these presentations!  They are looking really great!

As a reminder, the quarter ends Friday.  (This year is really flying by!)  This will also be the last day for students to earn AR points.  The required number is 10, and most students have reached that already.  Friday will also be a half day for Inservice.
