Happy Monday!
Here is a look at our week ahead:
In Math, we will look at non-standard units of measurement such as your hand or foot or even paper clips to help find the length and width of things. We will then move on to customary measurements such as inch, foot, and yard. Students will also take a look at measurements of capacity, such as pint, cup, quart, and gallon. We will then take this opportunity to teach students to convert customary measurements, and check for reasonableness of answers.
This week in Social Studies, we will begin our unit on our state today. In this unit, we will look at arts, sports, and recreation in our state. This is a short unit so we will review and then test on Friday.
In Reading, students will take time to read from a particular point of view. They will then decide how the reading passage is narrated; first or third person.
In English Language Arts, students will begin the drafting process on their expository papers. Hopefully you have read the note sent home last Tuesday and discussed the options with your child. Our final drafts should be completed by the end of Friday, and presentations will begin on the following Monday. A reminder note of your child's presentation will be sent home later this week.

January 22-25
What a great long weekend!
Here is a look at what we will be studying this week.
In Math, we will begin Tuesday with learning to compute the mean and average. On Wednesday, we will be preparing for a test that will be on Thursday. On Friday, we will begin order of operations.
This week in Science, we will have a chapter review over chapter 3 on Friday.
Reading and English Language Arts go hand in hand this week. We will be using this week as an opportunity to study Martin Luther King, Jr. In Reading, we will use Langston Hughes' speech "Dream" and King's "I Have a Dream" speech to look at word connotations, or how one word can mean many different things. We will then use the "I Have a Dream Speech" in Writing to work with paraphrasing another writer's words. In Reading, we will jump into another story called, Happy Birthday, Dr. King that can be found in our reading book. Using that story, we will study cause and effect. On Thursday, students will look at summarizing as a review using the story, Martin's Big Words. To do this, students will use a strategy called "Sum it up" where each word costs $0.10 and they can only spend $2.00 on their summary. We will then read the book, A Taste of Colored Water reviewing word connotation. The story is about children from the south in the 1960's who misunderstand the meaning of "Colored Water".
We will continue with RTI this week, still covering Author's Purpose.
We will be taking the NWEA computerized tests this week from 1:55-2:55 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. I know this is a time of year that sickness is prevalent, but your student being present during these testing days is helpful.

January 14- 18
Brrrrr! I hope that at of you stayed warm this weekend. What a drastic temperature drop! Remember to make sure your children are dressed warmly. As recess goes, as long as the wind chill is up, and it is above freezing, we will go outside.
This week in Math, we will continue to review two more units before moving on to a new concepts. On Wednesday, we will begin a new lesson in dividing greater numbers. Some students really had a grasp on division, so hopefully they retained all of the skills they needed to complete this lesson successfully. On Thursday, we will work on the guess and check method, and Friday we will look at finding the better buy.
In Science, students will start looking at animals and how they feed, as well as cold blooded animals and how they survive. Students will look at an animals instinct to camouflage itself in its habitat. We will continue looking at animals with specialized structures that help them survive.
This week in Reading, we will dive into a new standard of reading works from other cultures. This sounds rather challenging, but we think we have found a way to make it less so. We will begin by reading Cinderella, the Walt Disney Version. On Tuesday, we will read a Caribbean version known as Cendrillion. We will then move on to reading a graphic novel of Cinderella. We hope that the students will be able to use a familiar story to connect across the cultures of literature. On Thursday, we will complete a Web Quest online about the story. (See the link on the sidebar to play games at home!) Another Common Core concept that we will hit is to compare books to movies. On Friday, we will watch "Cinderella" while we compare it to the book.
In English Language Arts, students will take a look at writing with the three different author's purposes. The purposes are to persuade, to inform, and to entertain. Students are responsible for knowing how to recognize each purpose from a reading passage, and they must also be able to write from each purpose effectively. We will study a different purpose each day, and practice writing from it.
This week is RTI. Our skill for this week happens to be Author's Purpose. This allows us to take a deeper look as a reader, and how to determine the author's purpose.

January 8-11
Welcome back! I hope that everyone had a relaxing, and enjoyable break. Now that we are back, it is time to start studying more challenging concepts and preparing to take the infamous state-wide test, the MAP Test!!!
To start off this week, I wanted to make sure you all knew that we are starting today off as a Day 1. Also, we missed the Character Awards Assembly due to weather, so we will have the assembly today, at 2:15. Grade cards will go out on Wednesday, January 9. Be looking for those.
In Math this week, we will start the quarter off by reviewing each unit that we have covered so far. Each day, we will review a unit at a time to get the students back into the swing of things. This will also give me a good idea of what concepts we may need to hit again in a more intense manner.
In Science, students will be making bird feeders to observe the behavior of birds in our state. Each student will make a feeder, and take theirs home. We will make one together to place on the school grounds to allow for observation.
In Reading, we will be using this week to look at Drama and Poetry. We will study each genre on its own, and then compare and contrast the two. By the end of the week, students should notice that the main difference is that poetry contains more figurative language to paint a picture using words, and drama uses actions.
In English Language Arts, students will first be looking at prepositional phrases. The goal of this lesson is that students recognize that these phrases give us the location. Students will also be looking at comparative an superlative adverbs. These are adverbs that compare two things. Our strategy for the week will be "Mapping the Text". This strategies allows for students to look at a piece of writing and dissect it. They will be looking at anything they notice about the writing, and using those strong pieces of writing to try to prompt their own.
