March 18- 22

Here is a look at our week ahead.

In Math, students will be looking at area and volume.  By Wednesday, we will begin studying fractions.  This is another concept that could be difficult for some students.  It is important that students, parents, and teacher   work together to make sure that  there is a strong understanding of the concept.  Please feel free to contact me if you feel there is any confusion.

This week, we will get back to Social Studies.  We will begin the unit by discussing Missouri becoming the 24th state, and all of the history that comes with that.  We will also read and learn about Missouri and the part it played in westward expansion.  We will be ready for a test by next Tuesday.

In Reading, we will be looking at a couple of different types of informational texts.  We will start our week by discussing technical texts using the story, "Talking Under Water".  We will then move onto another technical text, "Tools of the Fossil Hunter".  With each of these, we will discuss what a technical text is, and tips for reading it.  We will then read a scientific text, "Nature's Worst Storm", as well as "Adapting to Survive".  Both are texts that discuss Science in a reading structure.  For all of these informational texts, students will complete a comprehension check using the tips for reading that we have discussed.

In English Language Arts, we will focus on conventions in writing.  In this, students will take time to notice the difference between revising and editing, and well as practice both.  Students will use their own writing by the end of the week to practice skills in revising and editing.

If this looks like a short week, it is!  We have our Squaw Creek Field trip in Friday, March 22.  We will leave at 8:30 and return at 2:30.

Look for report cards on Tuesday.  Please sign and return as soon as possible.
