January 8-11

Welcome back!  I hope that everyone had a relaxing, and enjoyable break.  Now that we are back, it is time to start studying more challenging concepts and preparing to take the infamous state-wide test, the MAP Test!!!

To start off this week, I wanted to make sure you all knew that we are starting today off as a Day 1.  Also, we missed the Character Awards Assembly due to weather, so we will have the assembly today, at 2:15.  Grade cards will go out on Wednesday, January 9.  Be looking for those.

In Math this week, we will start the quarter off by reviewing each unit that we have covered so far.  Each day, we will review a unit at a time to get the students back into the swing of things.  This will also give me a good idea of what concepts we may need to hit again in a more intense manner.

In Science, students will be making bird feeders to observe the behavior of birds in our state.  Each student will make a feeder, and take theirs home.  We will make one together to place on the school grounds to allow for observation.

In Reading, we will be using this week to look at Drama and Poetry.  We will study each genre on its own, and then compare and contrast the two.  By the end of the week, students should notice that the main difference is that poetry contains more figurative language to paint a picture using words, and drama uses actions.

In English Language Arts, students will first be looking at prepositional phrases.  The goal of this lesson is that students recognize that these phrases give us the location.  Students will also be looking at comparative an superlative adverbs.  These are adverbs that compare two things.  Our strategy for the week will be "Mapping the Text".  This strategies allows for students to look at a piece of writing and dissect it.  They will be looking at anything they notice about the writing, and using those strong pieces of writing to try to prompt their own.
